19/09/2018 (Agence Europe) – During a telephone conversation with Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu of Turkey on the evening of Tuesday 18 September, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini underlined the importance of implementing the agreement reached the day before between the Russian and Turkish presidents regarding a demilitarised zone in Idblib (Syria). The agreement “should guarantee the protection of civilian lives and infrastructure, enable humanitarian access and provide a basis for the renewal of the political process under the auspices of the UN (...) with a view to an inclusive, credible and sustainable political solution for Syria”, a press release from the European External Action Service stated. Mogherini pointed out that a military offensive in Idblib was to be avoided and that Astana guarantors have committed to safeguard this last remaining de-escalation zone. (CG)
