17/09/2018 (Agence Europe) – The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has urged the European Union to be more ambitious over the deadlines for the compulsory introduction of direct vision cabins in heavy goods vehicles, to make them compatible with urban traffic, in a letter reported by Transport & Environment on Friday 14 September. Whilst the Mayor, a member of the Labour Party, welcomes the normative proposals made by the Commission in the General Safety Regulation for vehicles (GSR regulation) presented in May of this year (see EUROPE 12022), he urges the Commission to require all new models of heavy goods vehicles to comply with the regulation by 2024, and all new vehicles by 2026. Readers may recall that the European Commission is proposing that all models be compatible by 2026 and all new vehicles by 2029. The full letter is available at: https://bit.ly/2MHQcXE. (PH)
