On Wednesday 12 September, the Council of the EU adopted without discussion its new mandate on the interoperability of information systems.
The Council set out to adopt a revised mandate. The changes relate to amendments made by the Commission to take account of negotiations that have taken place or are still taking place on the European information systems covered by the proposal on interoperability, namely the ETIAS, SIS, eu-LISA, ECRIS-TCN and Eurodac systems, a Council source explained. The new mandate has also been amended by means of a few “technical corrections”.
Readers may recall that the Commission's proposals on the interoperability of information systems, which were put forward at the end of 2017 in the form of two regulations, aim to allow the law enforcement authorities and police to make faster searches on individuals across the range of different systems, by searching on a single portal. A single authorisation will be needed to carry out a search of this kind in the various European databases, rather than an authorisation for each different register. The proposals will also help in the fight against multiple identities.
The member states adopted their position on interoperability in June of this year (see EUROPE 12041). The European Parliament has yet to take position and is still discussing its amendments. (Original version in French by Solenn Paulic)
