12/09/2018 (Agence Europe) – Those who had hoped for strong words on the climate in the State of the Union address by President Juncker on Wednesday 12 September at the European Parliament were left dissatisfied. The president of the European Commission certainly noted the EU's commitment to climate action as shown, he said, by its constant defence of the Paris Climate Agreement, and its desire to "leave a healthier planet behind for those that follow", but didn’t make any new announcements. This was regretted on behalf of the Greens/EFA group by Germany’s Ska Keller, who said that we know what to do, so that is good news, but the bad news is that we are not doing it. Keller said the Commission had been too timid over the past five years and now we need to turn our backs on coal and turn to renewable energy. (AN)
