27/08/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 27 August, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS), Maja Kocijancic, said the report of the UN fact-finding mission on Burma was a "timely and crucial input" ahead of the UN Human Rights Council session. The EEAS is currently analysing the report. The perpetrators of human rights violations must be held accountable, Kocijancic added. Members of the mission will be in Brussels this week and will meet representatives from the EEAS and European Parliament. The mission has called for the international judiciary to prosecute the head of the Burmese army and five other high-ranking officers for "genocide", "crimes against humanity" and "war crimes" against Rohingya Muslims. "Through their acts and omissions, the civilian authorities have contributed to these atrocious crimes being committed", Kocijancic added. (CG)
