24/08/2018 (Agence Europe) – During a trip to Georgia on Friday 24 August, Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel said the May 2019 European elections will the scene of a very hard fight between the supporters of increased European integration – an idea which is no longer obvious – and the nationalist movements that advocate isolation. She identified two ways of responding to the challenges of globalisation: - cooperating multilaterally at European level to defend Europe's values and interests after understanding that a member state of the EU is too small to address these challenges alone; - curling up inside national borders. Merkel described the second option, supported by eurosceptics and europhobes, as "dangerous". (MB)
