24/08/2018 (Agence Europe) – According to ALLEA (All European Academies) (see EUROPE 12079), in a press release of Friday 24 August, the European University Association (EUA) has denounced the Hungarian government's resolve to withdraw accreditation from gender studies. The EUA calls on the Hungarian Ministry for Human Resources to cancel the decree (42294/2018) that shuts down the only two gender study courses in Hungary, offered at the Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) and the Central European University (CEU). In the EUA's view, the government's official reason for the closure of the courses (that there is no need for graduates in this field in Hungary) is unfounded as the ELTE course only launched last year and the CEU has data that prove the employment success of its international graduates over almost a decade. The EUA also points out that the universities concerned were not consulted and that the Hungarian National Rectors’ Conference only had 24 hours to answer. (PH)
