19/07/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 19 July, the European Commission decided to send Belgium to the European Court of Justice because it has still not fully transposed Directive 2014/36/EU on seasonal workers, the deadline for which was set for 30 September 2016. The directive determines the entry and residence conditions for seasonal workers from outside the EU and defines the rights of this category of worker. It covers, for example, access to the labour market for periods of up to nine months and the rights (work conditions, pay, safety and social security) granted to such workers. With this referral, the Commission proposes a daily fine on Belgium of €49,906.50 from the date of the future court ruling. If it decides on this option, the Court of Justice will decide on the final amount. (SP)
