Hungary announces it will turn back on future Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration

19/07/2018 (Agence Europe)Unsurprisingly, Hungary will not subscribe to the future Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, which was the subject of an agreement at the UN on 14 July and which is to be concluded formally in Marrakesh in December (see EUROPE 12005).  Hungary's Foreign Affairs Minister Peter Szijjarto said in Budapest on Wednesday 18 July that his country should withdraw from the approval process.  "Hungary must withdraw from the approval process", he said, believing that this future compact, although not binding, is "dangerous for the world and for Hungary".  In Szijjarto's view, the compact "will incite millions of people to take to the route".  The USA withdrew from the process last year.  Hungary had already expressed specific demands on the 'migration' chapter of the Council mandate for the negotiation of the post-Cotonou agreement between the EU and the ACP countries.  (AN)
