Proposals on new EU-Côte d’Ivoire fisheries agreement

The European Commission adopted three proposals on Monday 2 July on the new protocol to the fisheries agreement between the EU and Côte d’Ivoire.

The new protocol was initialled on 16 March and covers a period of six years (2018-2024) from the date of its provisional application, i.e. from the date on which it was signed. The main aim of the new protocol is to provide fishing opportunities for EU vessels in Côte d’Ivoire waters, based on the best available scientific advice.

The protocol provides for fishing opportunities in the following categories: - 28 tuna seiners (16 Spanish and 12 French; - 8 surface longliners (6 Spanish and 2 Portuguese). The annual financial contribution from the EU is €682,000, based on: - a reference tonnage of 5,500 tonnes, for which an annual amount linked to access has been set at €330,000 for the first two years of application of the protocol and €275,000 for the remaining years (three to six); - support for development of the sectoral fisheries policy of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire of €352,000 per year during the first two years of application of the protocol and €407,000 for the remaining years (three to six).  (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
