INSTITUTIONAL / 2019 budget

Member states to try to reach position on 11 July

On Wednesday 11 July, the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Member States to the EU (Coreper) will attempt to agree on the position of the Council on the draft EU budget for 2019 (see EUROPE 12051). The experts of the EU member states met on Monday 2 July at the budgetary committee of the Council to continue work on the 2019 budget of the EU at technical level.

A trialogue between representatives of the three EU institutions will be held on 12 July and if necessary, Coreper may finalise the Council's position on the 2019 budget meeting of 18 July.

On 24 July, the Ecofin Council (meeting for its 'budget' session) will formally adopt the council's position on next year's budget. Negotiations between the institutions will continue in September.

On 5 July, Parliament will adopt its mandate ahead of the budgetary trialogue of 12 July (report by Italy's Daniele Viotti, S&D), which stresses, amongst other things, that the Commission's proposal corresponds broadly to Parlaiment's priorities. The mandate invites Parliament's negotiating team to further reinforce the key programmes. The draft 2019 budget proposed by the Commission provides for a 3.1% increase of the commitment appropriations.  (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
