EPP Group advocates new elections respecting democratic standards

The European People's Party (EPP) is proposing a resolution on the migration crisis and humanitarian situation in Venezuela and on its borders.  This includes a call for new elections that "comply with internationally recognised democratic standards".

During the European Parliament's plenary session in Strasbourg, the MEPs will discuss (on Tuesday 3 July) and vote (on Thursday) on resolutions on the humanitarian situation in Venezuela, following the visits of two European Parliament delegations to the country's border areas with Colombia and Brazil (see EUROPE 12035).

The EPP Group, whose member Agustín Díaz de Mera (EPP, Spain) led the mission to Colombia, will propose a resolution that requests a new election be held which respects international standards, especially the criteria of the Organisation of American States and the Venezuelan constitutional order.

Furthermore, MEPs from the EPP Group reaffirm the non-recognition of the result of the last presidential elections, which "were conducted without respecting the minimum international standards for a credible process, not respecting political pluralism, democracy, transparency and the rule of law".

The EPP hails the adoption at the EU Foreign Affairs Council of additional sanctions against Venezuelan leaders (see EUROPE 12048).

Other groups from the European Parliament, especially the Socialists and Democrats (S&D), whose member Francisco Assis (S&D, Portugal) led the visit to Brazil, could call for an increase in financial aid to this country in the "likely" situation that the migration flows become worse.  (Original version in French by Carmen García)
