If there is an area in which Donald Trump's U-turn on Saturday 9 June (who withdrew his support for the final G7 communiqué from Charlevoix, Quebec, Canada on 8-9 June) – did not have any impact, it is the fight against climate change and the future world pact for the environment, as the USA had already disengaged from its partners' commitments on this.
But on the fight against pollution of the oceans by plastic, the USA was joined by Japan in refusing to sign the G7 charter to which the EU and the other partners all rallied.
The EU considers that, as far as it is concerned, the final communiqué of this variable geometry G7, remains totally valid. "The Commission will take all necessary actions at all levels to achieve and promote the objectives set therein", the Commission stated on Monday.
"A healthy planet and sustainable economic growth are mutually beneficial", the communiqué states, which is why the seven biggest economies in the world said they would work at global level to reach out towards a sustainable and resilient future that creates jobs for their citizens.
The signatories collectively asserted their firm determination to achieve a clean environment, clean air, clean water and land in good health.
The also committed to continuing their ongoing action to strengthen collective energy security and to show leadership to ensure their energy systems continue to encourage sustainable economic growth.
All recognised that each country can makes its own way to achieve a low-emissions future and they looked forward to guidelines on this from COP 24.
Only Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the EU reaffirmed their strong commitment to implementing the Paris Agreement on ambitious climate action, especially by reducing emissions while strengthening adaptation capacity, and by increasing their efforts to mobilise the necessary financing. The also committed to promoting the fight against climate change through their collaboration in partnerships and through cooperation with all relevant partners at all levels.
