06/06/2018 (Agence Europe) – Following the visit to Japan last week, the European Commissioner for Justice has continued her tour on data protection with a visit to South Korea (see EUROPE 12032). On Friday 1 June, she had a meeting with the President of the Korean Data Protection Authority, Lee Hyo-Seong, in an effort to continue the discussions begun last November (see EUROPE 11908) for an approximation decision by the end of the year. In a joint press release on Wednesday they both referred to a “constructive meeting” and said that “The two parties share very similar values with respect to human rights, with both sides recognising personal data protection as a fundamental right”. The two parties also agreed to meet again this year, in Brussels this time, to finalise the talks. (MF)
