06/06/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 5 June, the European Parliament's civil liberties committee announced that a monitoring group on the rule of law was going to be set up which would particularly focus on issues of corruption and press freedom. It is due to the lack of progress in the investigations into the assassinations of two journalists, Daphne Caruana Galizia from Malta and Jan Kuciak from Slovakia, that this initiative has been set up. The group will be chaired by Sophie in’t Veld (ALDE, Netherlands) and will consist of Roberta Metsola (EPP, Malta), Josef Weidenholzer (S&D, Austria), Judith Sargentini (Greens/EFA, Netherlands) and Laura Ferrara (EFDD, Italy). Representatives from the ECR, GUE/NGL and ENF have not yet been nominated. Its mandate will run until 31 December 2018 and will include the possibility of organising hearings, meetings, missions and the adoption of a final resolution. (MF)
