30/04/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 30 May, the European Commission proposed submitting the new psychoactive cycloproply fentanyl and methoxyacetyl fentanyl substances to control measures in the European Union. These two powerful synthetic opioids are mostly sold online as chemical research products or “legal” replacement products for illicit opioids. According to the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA), there have been more than 90 deaths in the EU and a significant number of overdoses linked to these toxic substances. The Commission proposal now has to be examined by the Council, which, in consultation with the European Parliament, will decide on whether to adopt the planned measures. In 2017 alone, the EU proposed a ban on 16 new psychoactive substances on EU territory. (MF)
