06/04/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 6 April, in a joint letter, 15 international and Syrian NGOs called on the UN secretary general, the EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy and also, among others, the ambassadors of the Political and Security Committee of the EU28 member states to “ensure that accountability for the atrocities committed in Syria and justice for the victims” would be “the focus of the discussions on the future of Syria” during the Brussels II Conference on 24 and 25 April. These organisations say impunity “is one of the root causes of the conflict”. They also trust that the conclusions reached by the conference will include recommendations on accountability and compensation for the victims, and that immediate measures will be taken to translate the recommendations into concrete actions.
