Monday 29 January

  • Brussels. Council of the EU. ‘Agriculture and Fisheries’ Council. ‘Agriculture: - exchange of views on the Commission communication “The future of food and agriculture” (advantages of the CAP, resources, objectives, subsidiarity). – Market situation in the sectors, such as sugar, milk and pork meat. – Commission report on matters related to international trade, such as the negotiation of the free-trade agreement with Mercosur. – Any other business: work programme of the Bulgarian Presidency, situation in countries hit by Xylella fastidiosa, 10th Global Forum for Food and Agriculture, the EU’s participation in the FAO and the election of the organisation’s Director General.
  • Brussels. Council of the EU. ‘General Affairs’ Council (article 50). – Adoption of a new set of negotiation directives to be awarded to the Commission in negotiations on Brexit, also clarifying the transitional arrangements to be included in the withdrawal agreement.
  • Brussels. European Parliament. Activities of the committees (to 01/02). – LIBE: debate with the Commissioner for the Security Union, Julian King, on the work of the high-level group on radicalisation; hearing of Catherine de Bolle, who has been selected by the Council for the post of Executive Director of Europol. – CONT: meeting with representatives of the Court of Auditors on the implementation of the 5% reduction in institution staff numbers for the period 2013-2017.

Weekly meeting of the College of Commissioners. – Legislative proposal on the evaluation of healthcare technologies (Katainen). – Revision of the directive on drinking water (Timmermans, Katainen). – Situation in Iran: update (Mogherini). – Entry into force of the new code of conduct of Commissioners: information provided by the Secretary General.

  • Luxembourg. *Court of Justice of the EU. *General Court of the EU: #Judgments: - T-105/16 (Philip Morris Brands/EUIPO – Explosal (Superior Quality Cigarettes FILTER CIGARETTES Raquel – Philip Morris’s opposition to the registration of the figurative sign of Raquel cigarettes as an EU trademark). – T-457/16 (Aldi Eikauf/EUIPO – Schwamm & Cie (Le Coq de France) – Application by the Aldi company to register the verbal sign Le Coq de France as an EU trademark).

Thursday 1 February

Informal meeting of the ministers responsible for Competitiveness (and 02/02). *Industry (attended by the representatives of Norway, Switzerland, the EESC, CoR and the business world): - Objectives and priorities of European industrial policy up to 2030. – Competitive advantages of European industry. – New trends in industrial development (digitalisation, changes in the human dimension of the industrial process, etc.). – Any other business: future development of energy-intensive industries and climate change, process of digitalisation in industry).
  • Brussels. European Parliament. Activities of the committees. – LIBE, EMPL, PETI: common hearing on the subject "The rights of EU citizens after Brexit"
  • Luxembourg. *Court of Justice of the EU. #Judgment: C-261/16 P (Kühne + Nagel International e.a./Commission – Appeal against fines handed down by the Commission to several companies in the framework of a cartel in the international air transit services sector). #Conclusions: C-25/17 (Jehovan Todistajat – Obligation for Jehovah’s Witnesses to comply with personal data processing rules in the framework of their door-to-door preaching activities).
