EU calls for investigations into summary executions

26/01/2018 (Agence Europe)As the commander of Khalifa Haftar's Libyan army, Mahmoud Al-Werfalli, set about the summary execution of ten detainees on Wednesday 24 January in retaliation for the previous day's attacks in Benghazi (see EUROPE 11947). The spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS) said on 25 January that "the European Union and the international community have repeatedly called for prompt and thorough investigations" into these kinds of crimes. "The disregard for international and Libyan law and the impunity of persons, including Mahmoud Mustafa Busayf Al-Werfalli, hinders the efforts to restore peace and safety for the Libyan people, and to give justice to victims of all such crimes", the spokesperson stated. Al-Werfalli is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes.  The EEAS spokesperson called on all parties in Libya to fully cooperate and respect the charges of the ICC.  (CG)
