In Brussels on Sunday 21 January, the Polish Foreign Minister, Jacek Czaputowicz, met the First Vice-President of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, as he had the expressed hopes of doing earlier in the week; in turn, he has invited the European official to visit Warsaw.
The new Foreign Minister is aiming to rebuild dialogue with the Commission representative, who had an uneasy relationship with his predecessor, Witold Waszczykowsi, and stop the EU from going any further in the so-called 'article 7' procedure, which the Commission triggered in December. According to Polish media sources, the new Foreign Minister used the meeting to explain to his counterpart the aim of the reforms implemented by his government. He also stressed that the Polish Constitutional Court was perfectly legal. According to the minister, it was also requested of Poland during the meeting to get more involved in border security.
Timmermans, for his part, tweeted that he was very pleased by the meeting and that he hoped that rule of law dialogue with Poland would be able to continue. (Original version in French by Solenn Paulic)
