04/01/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 2 January, the EU issued a call to all parties involved in the conflict in South Sudan to bring all forms of fighting to an immediate end, in line with the commitments they made in Addis Ababa on 21 December. “The European Union echoes the concern and disappointment expressed by the Chairperson of IGAD Council of Ministers over the violations of the Agreement on the Cessation of Hostilities, Protection of Civilians and Humanitarian Access”, stated the spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS) on Tuesday 2 January. The EU also calls for “an immediate and thorough investigation” to identify those responsible for the violations. It restates its support for IGAD and African Union efforts to bring peace to South Sudan. On 22 December, the EU hailed the Addis Ababa agreement as “an important step towards a resolution of the conflict”. (AN)
