MON 1507 among six GMOs for food authorised by Commission despite Parliament objections

Despite the European Parliament’s opposition, the European Commission, on 22 December, authorised the marketing in the EU of six genetically modified organisms (GMOs) for food and feed uses.

The six are: - four varieties of hybrid soybean, 305423 x 40-3-2, DAS-44406-6, FG72 x A5547-127 and DAS-68416-4; one hybrid oilseed rape, MON88302 x Ms8 x Rf3 from Monsanto; and the highly controversial maize MON 1507, also from Monsanto, authorisation of which was renewed.

In support of their objections, MEPs had highlighted serious shortcomings in the risk assessments carried out by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the concerns raised by these GMOs that are intended for food and feed (see EUROPE 11891).

Member states failed for each of the GMOs to come to the qualified majority required either to approve or to reject the European Commission’s proposals which were based of the favourable EFSA opinions.

The Commission was, therefore, empowered to take the decision. It decided to forge ahead with authorisation. The European Parliament’s objections, while politically important, are not legally binding. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
