In a joint press release published on Tuesday 19 December, the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) and the European Association for the Co-ordination of Consumer Representation in Standardisation (ANEC) have welcomed the Commission’s proposals for making it easier for companies to sells their products across Europe and tightening checks to prevent unsafe goods from being sold (see EUROPE 11929) but they want to go even further. BEUC wants all consumer goods to be covered not just those with the CE marking. It also wants checks to be beefed up for goods sold online, an accident and injury database to be set up and consumer groups to be involved European network for market surveillance. Above all, they want the CE marking removed from packaging. (PH)
