Unilateral constitutional revision process is compromising exit from crisis, EU warns

18/12/2017 (Agence Europe)Following the failure of the mediation meeting organised in Arusha by the Community of Central African States to try to bring an end to the crisis in Burundi, the EU called on Friday 15 December for dialogue among all the players in the country. “The only possible path to a lasting solution to the political crisis”, said the spokesperson for the European External Action Service in a press release. “In this context, the government’s unilateral launch of a constitutional review process carries a number of risks. It runs counter to efforts to find agreement and could lead to the abandonment of key provisions in the Arusha peace agreement, which still remains the main instrument for peace and stability in Burundi and the region”, states the press release. The EU restates its full support for the mediation efforts led by former Tanzanian President and facilitator Benjamin Mkapa.  (AN)
