EU and Pristina highlight visa liberalisation

On Friday 29 September, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and Kosovo's Foreign Minister Behgjet Pacolli underlined that efforts should be made for the liberalisation of visas for Kosovan citizens.

Reiterating the European perspective and commitment of the new government to bring progress to the reforms, Pacolli tweeted that the goal was visa liberalisation for citizens.  Mogherini meanwhile stated in a press release that "with the new government in office, Kosovo is well placed to move forward on fulfilling the only two remaining conditions for visa liberalisation, notably to ratify the border demarcation agreement with Montenegro and to sustain the track record on the fight against organised crime and corruption".

According to the European External Action Service, Mogherini also reaffirmed her strong commitment to the European Union perspective of the entire Western Balkans region, so that by the end of her mandate the progress achieved will be irreversible for all six partners.

During a speech in Maastricht the previous day, Mogherini had underlined the importance of the Balkans.  She said that the EU has a "responsibility" to them and cannot turn to the Balkans only when there is a problem such as migration or terrorism.  "This is about a part of the world where only the EU can make a difference", she added.  (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
