On Friday 29 September, the European Commission proposed macro-financial aid of €45 million to help Georgia to honour its international financial commitments.
Of this envelope of €45 million, €35 million will be made available in the form of medium-term loans at preferential rates and €10 million will be paid in the form of subsidies.
According to the Commission, the macro-economic situation in Georgia remains fragile and its monetary reserves too low, for instance due to a high level of external debt.
The payment, in 2018, of two tranches of financial aid will be conditional on the Georgian authorities' compliance with an economic adjustment programme and the smooth functioning of the aid plan agreed upon between Tbilissi and the IMF in April.
Since 2009, the EU has already granted this country of the EU's neighbourhood two macro-financial aid plans, each with an envelope of €46 million. (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
