At the Agriculture Council in Brussels on Tuesday 18 July, Slovenia, backed by a number of delegations, again protested against the delegated regulation that will allow producers of Croatian wines under the protected designation of origin “Hrvatska Istra” to label their wines with the name of the “Teran” grape variety (see EUROPE 11792).
Slovenia criticised this challenge to the “Teran” protected designation of origin (PDO), highlighted that there is no tradition in Croatia of the use of the “Teran” name and argued that consumers may be misled.
The delegated act at issue will come into force this Wednesday, 19 July. Slovenia said that it was planning to appeal to the Court of Justice of the EU against the delegated act that allows Croatia to label its wines “Teran”.
At the Agriculture Council, Italy argued that this “Teran” wine affair must not create a precedent. Hungary, France and Slovakia stressed the importance of geographical indications and supported Slovenia in its concerns. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
