22/06/2017 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 19 June, the European Commission approved State aid in the region of €130 million granted by the Croatian authorities to the public railway operator, HZ Cargo. In May 2015, the Croatian state decided to write off the debt it held in the company, which was in financial difficulties at the time. The Commission found that this operation was compatible with EU law on State aid, as the debt that was written off predated Croatia's accession to the EU and was directly related to its transport operations. It was also necessary to allow the company to overcome its financial difficulties and its excessive level of indebtedness. Finally, the Commission found that the State aid did not hinder competition on the market. (LT)
