07/06/2017 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission decided in Wednesday 7 June on the partial registration of a European Citizens’ Initiative entitled “Stop extremism” which calls on the Commission to “propose legislation in order to prevent the adverse consequences of extremism, above all for the Internal Market”. The decision concerns only the legal admissibility of the proposal. At this stage, the Commission has not analysed its substance. It opens the one-year process of collection of signatures of support by its organisers. Should the initiative receive one million statements of support within one year from at least seven different member states, the Commission will have to respond within three months. It can decide either to allow the request or not but, in both instances, will be required to explain its reasoning. (LC)
