29/05/2017 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission said on Monday 29 May that it had received the Hungarian authorities’ reply to the formal notice sent on 26 April on the Central European University. “We have received the response from the Hungarian authorities within the deadline set”, said the institution’s spokesperson Margaritis Schinas and the Commission will now assess it. On 26 April, the Commission opened infringement proceedings against Hungary over the law on foreign-registered universities which could lead to the closure of the Central European University, funded by billionaire George Soros (see EUROPE 11775). In a break with usual procedure, the Commission gave Hungary only one month to respond to this first stage in the procedure. The Commission believes that the Hungarian law at issue raises a number of legal problems, in terms of primary law, with regard to the services directive, as the freedom of establishment is involved, as well as with regard to the general principles of the charter of fundamental rights.
