EU condemns new attack on Coptic Christians

29/05/2017 (Agence Europe)On Friday 26 May, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service condemned an attack on the Coptic Christian community in Egypt the same day.  "The freedom of faith and the right to pray in safety are fundamental human rights and whoever violates these rights commits a crime against humanity", the spokesperson said in a press release.  An attack on a bus carrying Coptic Christians on a pilgrimage left at least 29 people dead.  The attack has been claimed by so-called Islamic State.  "We expect those responsible to be brought to justice and held accountable", the spokesperson said, adding that when "religious communities are attacked, all religious communities, the whole human kind is attacked".  The spokesperson also reiterated the EU's support and commitment alongside that of the Egyptian authorities and the Egyptian people in the fight against terrorism.  (CG)
