On Monday 8 May, the European Commission adopted a proposal on the position to be argued by the EU at the forthcoming general assembly of the International Organisation of Wine and Vine (OIV) on 2 June 2017.
The OIV will discuss and potentially adopt resolutions which will have an effect on EU law on winemaking practices.
At present, the EU is not a member of the OIV, though 20 of its member states are. They may propose amendments to draft OIV resolutions.
The Commission says that the resolutions that will be submitted at the general assembly have been widely discussed by scientific and technical experts from the winemaking sector. They will help harmonise international wine standards and will establish a framework ensuring fair competition in the marketing of products from the wine sector. Consequently, they should be supported, argues the Commission. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
