Only a few countries have begun decarbonisation required by Paris Agreement

Brussels, 20/04/2017 (Agence Europe)According to a report published on 20 April by Climate Action Tracker, the expansion in renewable energies in the world is taking place in just a handful of countries. This is despite the fact that the Paris Agreement requires the transformation of the energy systems globally, if we are to achieve decarbonisation by 2050. Markus Hagemann, one of the authors of the report, explained, “Germany, Denmark, and Spain introduced strong policy packages to encourage renewable energy... Next came the UK and Italy, and then China, whose bulk manufacture—especially in solar technology—provided economies of scale”. The same trend is observed in transport with the production of electric cars (more than 1 million sales in 2016) with just a few pioneers (Norway, Netherlands, California and China). The construction sector is lagging behind. (AN)
