EU-Morocco joint parliamentary committee adopts roadmap on economic and security issues

During its 8th annual session, in Rabat on Tuesday 18 April, the EU-Morocco joint parliamentary committee established a "roadmap" to bring a "concerted response to subjects of common interest, including neighbourhood policy, security issues, migration, the fight against radicalisation and the development of economic and trade cooperation", the leader of the EU-Morocco joint parliamentary committee and member of Morocco's Chamber of Representatives, Abderrahim Atmoun, stated.

"We intend to focus on resolving all the issues" that hamper the development of our relationship, he said. Atmoun added that there was a "need to put the work of the EU-Morocco joint parliamentary committee into a wider perspective that encapsulates issues related to peace and security, as well as socio-economic development, solidarity and regional integration".

Alongside Atmoun, the co-leader of the EU-Morocco joint parliamentary committee, Ines Ayala Sender (S&D, Spain), hailed Morocco's efforts on this.  She also highlighted "Morocco's experience and work to address the various threats that are rampant in the Euro-Mediterranean region, including terrorism and radicalism", Morocco's media report.

In Atmoun's view, "the security, political and economic agendas of the Sahelo-Saharan area and of the Atlantic coast require mutual concerted approaches and partnership".  Security measures "must be accompanied by upstream work on the roots of radicalisation" and the factors that trigger it.  This involves "recruitment, financing and access to weapons and other materials", he said.  (Original version in French by Fathi B’Chir)
