Commission wants to speed up national return decisions for illegal migrants and advocates need for detention

The European Commission wants to help member states improve the way in which they apply return decisions taken against migrants illegally residing in the European Union or whose applications for asylum have been turned down. In this regard on Thursday 2 March, it proposed a specific action plan on the returns of so-called “economic” migrants and a number of recommendations for member states (see EUROPE 11734).
