Inflation confirmed at 1.8% in Eurozone in January

The annual inflation rate in the Eurozone stood at 1.8% in January 2017, compared to 1.1% in December 2016, according to figures published by the statistical office of the European Union (Eurostat).

Annual inflation in the EU as a whole was 1.7% in January 2017, compared to 1.2% in December.

In January 2017, the annual rates were positive throughout the EU. They were lowest in the following countries: Ireland (0.2%), Romania (0.3%), Bulgaria (0.4%) and Denmark and Cyprus (0.7%). Inflation was low in Italy (1.0%), average in France and the Netherlands (1.6%) and in line with the ECB mission in Germany (1.9%). The highest annual rates were seen in Belgium (3.1%) and in Latvia and Spain (2.9% each).

The greatest upwards impacts to the euro area annual inflation rate came from fuels for transport (+0.5%) and heating oil and vegetables (+0.14%), whilst telecommunications (-0.09%), gas (-0.08%) and bread & cereals (-0.05%) had the biggest downwards impacts.
