22/02/2017 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 20 February, the European Space Agency (ESA) announced that it had adopted a new Open Access policy for its content such as still images, videos and selected sets of data. ESA intends to facilitate the access of the public, media, education sector stakeholders and agency partners to this data “as well as anybody else seeking to utilise and build upon it”. Jan Woerner, ESA director-general, stated on this occasion that, “This evolution in opening access to ESA’s images, information and knowledge is an important element of our goal to inform, innovate, interact and inspire in the Space 4.0 landscape”. In this regard, ESA has decided to award “Creative Commons” licenses that authorise, for example, the publication of images in the online encyclopaedia, Wikipedia, explained ESA in a press release.
