EU expected to extend weapons embargo and sanctions on four people

22/02/2017 (Agence Europe)On Wednesday 22 February, the ambassadors of the EU member states agreed on extending the restrictive measures for a year on four people linked to the disappearance of two politicians, a businessman and a journalist in Belarus, a European source told EUROPE.  These four people are Vladimir Naumov, Dmitri Pavlichenko, Viktor Sheiman and Iury Sivakov.  The current sanctions run until 28 February 2017.  The embargo on weapons to Belarus will also be extended, while being amended to authorise weapons used in biathlon (which will nevertheless remain subject to authorisation).  According to the same source, this extension is expected to be adopted formally by the Council of the EU without debate on Monday 27 February.  (CG)
