Visiting Brussels on Wednesday 15 February, Algeria's Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra announced, along with High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, the conclusion of the review process for the EU-Algeria association agreement.
A common document setting "the priorities of the strategic partnership between Algeria and the EU" will be adopted at the Association Council in Brussels on 13 March.
This document defines "the broad outlines on various aspects ranging from good governance, democracy, the rule of law and the free movement of people, to cooperation in the security and energy domain", Lamamra stated. The intention is for his country to be accompanied in "both its political and economic reforms through the diversification of its economy", a "diplomatic source" stated, as quoted by French news agency AFP. Mogherini hailed the "encouraging developments" recorded in this relationship.
She and Lamamra addressed the common regional challenges, which include "security, the prevention of, and fight against, terrorism and migration" including Libya, Mali and the Maghreb. She also responded positively to the invitation to contribute to the parliamentary elections on 4 May by deploying "an expert electoral mission to conduct an analysis of the electoral process", a European press release states.
