19/12/2016 (Agence Europe) – The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) fully supports the approach advocated by the European Commission for revising the 1996 directive on the posting of workers. This is borne out in the opinion adopted on Thursday 15 December during the EESC plenary session, with 180 votes in favour, 84 against, with 30 abstentions. In this opinion, the EESC expresses its supports for the idea of limiting the period of a posting to 24 months but considers, at the same time, that a six-month time limit would be better suited to the situation affecting companies in this regard. A counter opinion on the same subject was also submitted to a vote and showed the existence of similar tension at the EESC as that experienced at the Council of the EU and European Parliament. This counter opinion, however, was rejected as it only received 94 votes in favour at the plenary session (175 against, with 23 abstentions). (JK)
