LIFE pilot project to involve young volunteers in Natura 2000

Assisting with nature conservation in Europe could be the start of careers for young Europeans aged 18-30, the European Commission believes. And the official launch of the European Solidary Corps on Wednesday 7 December was accompanied by an initiative on a pilot nature project (see EUROPE 11684 and 11624).

The Commission launched a “call for preparatory actions” for the deployment of European Solidary Corps volunteers to support the conservation of the pan-European Natura 2000 sites. The first of these actions will focus initially on mobilising in-country volunteers.

The pilot project will be funded to the tune of €3.3 million by LIFE environment and the European rural development fund (ERDF).

Through the European Solidarity Corps, young people will have a chance to contribute directly as we strive to constantly improve that network”, said Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Commissioner Karmenu Vella in a press release.

The announcement coincided with the Commission’s decision to work in close cooperation with local authorities and member states to improve how the habitats and birds directives are implemented, rather than revise the two pieces of legislation that are crucial to protecting nature and preserving biodiversity (see EUROPE 11684).
