On Thursday 24 November, MEPs called on the Council of the EU to take out targeted sanctions to punish those responsible for ill-treating Ildar Dadin and other human rights defenders in Russia.
Ildar Dadin, a prisoner of conscience, is currently serving twelve and a half years in prison for participating in a series of demonstrations.
By adopting the joint resolution of the Greens/EFA, ECR, EPP, S&D and ALDE Groups, MEPs call for an independent and transparent investigation into the recent allegations of torture and ill-treatment of Dadin in prison. They also want the Russian authorities to allow Dadin's immediate and unconditional release, as well as that of all other people detained for unfounded or false allegations, or for using their right to the freedom of expression and assembly.
In the Parliament's view, the European Council should work on a unified policy towards Russia, which commits the 28 member states to a strong common position as regards the role of human rights in the relationship between the EU and Russia. The Parliament also asks High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini to work, in collaboration with the European Commission and European External Action Service, on a substantial and concrete strategy to support civil society and Russian organisations.
