21/11/2016 (Agence Europe) – On Sunday 20 November during World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDR), Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc, and her colleague responsible for the health portfolio, Vytenis Andriukaitis, launched an appeal to European citizens to be aware of road-related risks. In a video made during the day, Mr Andriukaitis stated "Please, don’t drink and drive!" The Commissioner for Transport pointed out that 70 people died every day on European roads, which added to his “frustration”. Following a drastic reduction at the beginning of the century in the number of deaths on the roads, this figure has stagnated over recent years and the Commission is extremely concerned about this (see EUROPE 11629). The Commission, however, was recently criticised for its in action on this issue by Transport & Environment, a Brussels based think tank. (see EUROPE 11670). (PH)
