Commissioner Stylianides ups ante

21/11/2016 (Agence Europe)European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides, has condemned the massive bombardments that targeted East Aleppo last weekend and over previous days, in no uncertain terms. In a press release published on Sunday 20 November, the Commissioner stated that ”the relentless bombing of East Aleppo by the Syrian regime in the last few days has now left hundreds of thousands of besieged civilians without access to food and functioning hospitals. This comes after the refusal to allow medical and other urgent humanitarian supplies into the city during the pause in fighting”. The Commissioner added that “these unacceptable violations of international humanitarian law could amount to war crimes and must cease, and the airstrikes must be stopped to allow humanitarian aid delivery into East Aleppo and the evacuation of wounded civilians”. Mr Stylianides pointed out that, “Those responsible for such atrocities will be held accountable under international law.  They must realise that each new atrocity of this kind only makes an end to the conflict harder to achieve”.
