25/10/2016 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 25 October, the European Parliament decided to remove the parliamentary immunity of Jean-Marie Le Pen (non-attached France), Mario Borghezio (ENF, Italy) and Jane Collins (EFDD, United Kingdom). The Court of Appeal in Paris requested the lifting of Le Pen’s parliamentary immunity as part of legal proceedings into incitement to racial hatred opened against the Front National MEP. Borghezio has been the subject of criminal proceedings for similar reasons at the Court in Milan. The European Parliament is, however, calling on Italian authorities to comply with the Court of Justice caselaw requiring the suspension in the legal proceedings, in the event of a request for Borghezio’s parliamentary immunity to be lifted. Collins is a subject of a civil action at the High Court in London for defamation and slander. (MB)
