On Tuesday 25 October, the European Commission announced aid of €66.5 million for food security in the Horn of Africa nations worst affected by El Niño.
The money will come from the EU emergency trust fund for Africa established in November 2015 (see EUROPE 11429), and will be divided up as follows: €28 million for South Sudan, €22.5 million for Ethiopia, €8 million for Somalia, and €8 million for Sudan. It will be used to help people made vulnerable by drought, to improve water management systems, and to boost the capabilities of local institutions in direct contact with the community.
The trust fund has already mobilised €370 million for Horn of Africa nations (see EUROPE 11543). (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
