23/09/2016 (Agence Europe) – According to a new survey published by Eurostat on Friday 23 September, the learning of foreign languages is working quite well in the European Union. In 2014, more than four out of five primary school children (84%) had lessons to learn a foreign language. In Cyprus, Luxembourg and Malta 100% of primary school children were learning a foreign language. Portugal, Belgium and Slovenia lagged behind, however, as fewer than half the primary school children were learning a foreign language in these countries (36.2%, 37% and 48.4% respectively). Unsurprisingly, the most common foreign language in primary schools was English, except in Belgium and Luxembourg (two multi-lingual countries). (SPj)
