EU announces additional €5 million to tackle poverty-related diseases

20/09/2016 (Agence Europe)On the occasion of the Fifth Replenishment Conference of the Global Fund in Montreal (17-19 September) against malaria, AIDS and tuberculosis, European Commissioner for Development and Cooperation Neven Mimica announced an additional €5 million from the European Commission. This brings the Commission's overall commitment to the fund to €475 million for the 2017-19 period (see EUROPE 11504), compared with €370 million for the 2014-16 period. "Collectively, the EU and its member states have been the largest donors to the fund since its creation" in 2002, Mimica commented, calling on other donors to follow the EU's example in order to speed up the joint efforts against this threefold scourge. In total, the Montreal conference has helped leverage almost $13 billion, which should help towards eradicating these diseases by 2030. (AN)
