On Monday 19 September, the European Union expressed alarm at the violence that occurred that day in clashes preceding a demonstration against the president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Joseph Kabila, which left 17 people dead. The EU called on all parties to show restraint and for the Congolese authorities to assume their responsibility.
