The buyout of Monsanto, the huge US GMO seed conglomerate, by Bayer, the German pharmaceutical group and chemicals and pesticides manufacturer, was greeted by environmental activists, farmers and those working in the human health field in Europe as "bad news". It raised such a furore that some of them launched an immediate appeal to the European competition authorities on Wednesday 14 September to reject this deal, for which Bayer has put €59 billion on the table.
